How To Clear Out Apps On Iphone X

  • The method you use to close apps on an iPhone depends on which model of the phone you have, as iPhone X models lack the home button that previous models had.
  • Despite conventional wisdom, you really don't need to regularly close unused apps on your iPhone; iOS is designed to manage all of your apps efficiently.
  • If you really need to close an app, you can start the app switcher by double-pressing the Home button on older iPhones, or swiping up on an iPhone X or later.
  • Once the app switcher is running, close apps by swiping up on the desired app.

Years of using desktop computers — both PCs and Macs — have "taught" us that keeping a lot of programs running will slow down the PC, use up memory, and cause glitches.

As a result, you might want to apply those same lessons to your iPhone, and close apps you aren't using. The reality is that you don't really need to do that: closing iPhone apps generally doesn't save battery life , extend your memory, or help your phone run better.

In fact, it can sometimes make things worse. That's because Apple designed iOS to intelligently manage apps, putting them in "suspended" low-power and low-memory states when not in use.

All that said, there may be times when you really need to close an app, especially if it's misbehaving. The process varies slightly depending upon which iPhone you're using.

3. Swipe up on the app you want to close. When it disappears off the top of the screen, it's closed.

4. Continue closing apps as desired.

5. When you're done closing apps, tap the screen to close the app switcher. If you tap an app card, you'll open that app; if you tap the screen around the cards, you'll be returned to the Home screen.

1. Double-press the Home button. This starts the app switcher, where you should see all of your apps represented as cards.

2. Swipe side-to-side through your apps until you find the one you want to close.

3. Swipe up on the app you want to close. When it disappears off the top of the screen, it's closed.

4. Continue closing additional apps as desired.

5. When you're done closing apps, tap anywhere on the screen other than the cards, or press the Home button to close the app switcher. If you tap an app card, you'll open that app.

If your home button is not functioning properly, you can also enable the iPhone's AssitiveTouch feature, which features an on-screen home button, and then follow the same steps to open the app switcher.

How to close multiple apps at once

Here's a handy little trick: It's possible to close up to three apps at a time.

To do that, just open the app switcher, and swipe up on up to three apps at the same time with multiple fingers.

It can take a little practice and coordination to pull this off, and obviously it needs to be three side-by-side apps that are all visible on the screen at once. It might be easier to just close them one at a time, but this option is available to you.
